About the Club

The Northamptonshire Bird Club was founded about 50 years ago by birding enthusiasts in
Northamptonshire as a means of sharing the pleasure of wild birds and birding. We try to cater for all levels of interest from local birds to world-wide birding. We have members interested in recording bird sightings, in ringing, in doing regular surveys or bird counts, in photography and in travel.

We meet on the first Wednesday of most months for an indoor meeting at Holcot Lodge, Pitsford Reservoir. This is situated on the edge of Holcot village on the right hand side of the road to Brixworth just as the road starts to descend to the reservoir causeway. Details of the site can be found here

In summer we hold a couple of these meetings at a local birding site. See the club's programme for more details. The indoor meetings usually consist of announcements followed by an illustrated talk about some aspect of birds and birding. However, our February meeting is a members' photographic competition, where wildlife photos taken during the previous year by club members are shown and judged. In March we hold an Annual General Meeting followed by a talk or some other event.  The club also publishes an illustrated monthly newsletter.

Once a month we organise a car trip to a nearby birding area, often this is to the East Coast as it is readily accessible but we try to find other sites to provide some variety. Every year we organise a foreign birding trip, which has become very popular. In the past few years we have visited South Africa, Bulgaria, Panama, Spain, Poland and France. We also try to organise a long weekend or week-long trip to more distant parts of the UK. Recent trips have included The Farne Islands, Solway Firth, Speyside and North Lancashire/Cumbria.

Although birding is our primary interest, most members have a wider interest in wildlife and we try to reflect this by having one meeting covering another aspect of wildlife (eg Dragonflies, Moths and Rare Wild Flowers have been recent subjects) and our field trips always include other aspects of wildlife.
